Atlanta Screenwriters Retreat
This weekend I traveled down to Atlanta to assist with the Atlanta Film Fest’s Screenwriters Retreat. I look to apply the knowledge that I gleaned from the experienced mentors and mentees, into my own work. Biggest nuggets of advice from the weekend (may be obvious, but worth repeating): Contests and retreats are great places to get advice on works in progress. But don’t get ahead...

Kevin Smith
For as good as Clerks was, it’s unfortunate that Kevin Smith has matured so little as a filmmaker since its release in 1994. Zack and Miri Make A Porno seems like a first draft that somehow made it into production. Some funny jokes, but no one reins him in when things get too juvenile or don’t quite hit their mark. Maybe he’ll write for someone else next time, or at least...

Patrick Henry Charter School
It’s been a chaotic year for the initiative, but in September the Richmond Public Schools finally approved the Patrick Henry Charter School slated for my neighborhood. Today I attended the first Volunteer Rally, to get the neighborhood involved in the various tasks that need to be performed before it’s proposed July ‘09 opening. I got involved with the facilities board,...

Today's distractions Nov. 6th
AV Club Interviews The AV Club is a place where the film, TV, or music fanatic in all of us can go and geek out. Their interviews are typically pretty in depth and cover so many icons of mine. Today I killed a good amount of time catching up on the following: Mystery Science Theater 3000: One of my favorite shows of all time; even the episodes that “miss” still have more great jokes...

Today's distractions Nov. 4th
Best Week Ever Front and center on my Google Homepage, BWE kills a few seconds at a time. Their list of unlicensed Halloween costumes helped me keep my mind of the important work being done by our country today. Go Vote Brainworms plays on election night while Greg sports the shirt of the evening.

Thoughts From The Virginia Film Fest - '08
For what they’re worth, these are my experiences from The VA Film Fest this past weekend, in Charlottesville, VA. Friday night I saw Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler. It was a relatively straightforward drama, which is surprising coming from Aronofsky, but was well acted and executed. Mickey Rourke was incredibly believable as Randy “The Ram”. Saturday morning I headed to a...
